PAX Prime 2012: Ted Price Keynote on Storytelling

At PAX, the opening keynote often sets the tone for the rest of the show. Ted Price, founder of Insomniac Gamesn did something a little different this year; his keynote was short but dynamic, tightly paired with animated presentation materials that quickly educated the audience with his personal experiences.

He focused on 4 key strategies for building games, and also storytelling on a broader scale:

  1. Do 1 thing better than anyone else, focus on innovation.
  2. Fun comes first.
  3. Define your audience.
  4. Make it personal.

To accomplish these goals, Price says that we must overcome 3 significant barriers with the following behaviors:

  • Conviction to defeat self doubt.
  • Flexibility to defeat rigidity.
  • Passion to defeat apathy.

It was a compelling talk with the most broadly applicable insights since Jane McGonigal’s keynote on applying game mechanics to how we live our lives from PAX East 2011.

If you attended today’s keynote, please share your thoughts!
