Review: geoSpark

This review is based on the iPhone version of geoSpark.

I’m a big fan of fusions, when it’s two things that should go together. When I came across the hybrid offspring of geoDefense and Harbor Master, I was really excited!

The result is geoSpark, which actually bears very little resemblance to either of the aforementioned games aside from the geoDefense aesthetic. An assortment of shapes float onto the screen, and you can either eliminate them one at a time by tapping on the shape, or by tapping and dragging to link up multiples of the same shape for combo bonuses. The goal is to avoid different shapes colliding together, and that’s it. You’ll get the occasional power up such as a score multiplier or a screen clearing burst, which comes in handy when the screen gets crowded.

It’s fun and frenetic, but really simple; you’ll get the concept and strategies within the first 5 minutes, and the rest of your time with geoSpark will be improvement through iteration. If there’s a way to do things differently or a better way to manage the waves of incoming shapes, it’s beyond me; I simply link up the most common shapes and quick tap to destroy the rest, faster and more accurately as my high score improves.

It’s challenging, but not varied enough to keep it compelling. OpenFeint integration adds in achievements and leaderboards to this single player experience, so it does contribute to your overall profile score. geoSpark is a fun diversion, but it isn’t varied or deep enough to become a mainstay of your mobile gaming habits.
