This review is based on the Xbox 360 version of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe.
Spider-Man has fought the forces of evil with his allies for many years, but what if he teamed up with his enemies? Eh, eh?
That’s the premise of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, a really basic beat-em-up title from developer Next Level Games. A meteor lands on Earth, scattering its shards throughout the planet with strange effects on the local populace. Spidey’s classic enemies are also enthralled by a mysterious force, so Nick Fury reaches out to the Web Crawler for his help to save the day once again.
You’re joined by a cadre of friendly faces such as Silver Sable and Blade along your journey, and enemies such as the Green Goblin and Rhino also become available as partners when you defeat them. Both Spidey and his cast of characters can add health, defense and ability upgrades with the plentiful currency, but all you really need is basic fisticuffs and a web line to rumble through the campaign. There are some easy to spot collectibles and a brawling arena on each level as well, if you want to get the full experience.
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is clearly designed for a younger audience. Enemies are really easy to defeat, levels are very linear and every boss encounter is solved by following a specific pattern. The graphics are really bright and cartoonishly exaggerated, with a bubbly colour palette over simple textures and bold lines. The cliche addled dialogue and Boom, Thwack, Pow! sound effects would also feel right at home in a Saturday morning cartoon.
Clocking in at under 6 hours, the game is a really short experience with no replay value. Still, if you’ve always dreamed of teaming up with Peter Parker’s storied foes, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
