Prince of Persia Rewinds Before Reboot?

In what is probably a marketing driven move, Ubisoft has announced that the next Prince of Persia game will pick up from the Sands of Time lineage. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is now slated for a May 2010 release to accompany the film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton; if made with the same standards as the earlier titles, it will likely be a top seller during a really busy gaming summer in 2010.

What does this mean for the 2008 reboot, which had simplified the game (you can’t even die or lose!) and focused heavily on the relationship between the Prince and beautiful princess Elika? It’s possible that Ubisoft will proceed with 2 different timelines or franchises in the Prince of Persia universe, but the future doesn’t look every bright right now for a continuation of that version.

In a related note, I’ve been meaning to finish the title and write up a proper review. It’s in the backlog of titles that I’m working through, but I hope to have it out by the end of the year.
