E3 2009: Ubisoft Impressions

Next up, Ubisoft:

  • Assassin’s Creed 2: New cinematic footage was an amped up version of the original title’s introductory assassination scene, a pretty cool sequence that showed off the Venice environment and…an arm mounted gun! The criticisms of repetitive missions and reliance on preset animations in combat were valid, but I felt that the rich atmosphere and exploration gameplay (genuine parkour/free running was a big leap of faith at that time) combined with the intense cinematics were really enjoyable. Ironing these out, along with the announced mission type expansion and ability to swim (it was incredibly frustrating to fail in a few feet of water) should be enough to deliver another engaging experience.
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction: I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I’ve never played the previous titles, but it looks quite intense. What happened to the shaggy mop that Sam Fisher was rocking in previous preview videos?
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up on the Wii looks eerily similar to the previous movie spinoff title, my interest will depend heavily on Peter Laird’s involvement (so far, he’s writing the solo campaign). Turtles in Time: Reshelled has more appeal for me, I have a soft spot for redone SNES classics!

I haven’t seen enough of the Avatar game to sway me one way or the other, and Red Steel 2 doesn’t catch my fancy (even with a bundled MotionPlus attachment). I’m glad Ubisoft is giving the Tom Clancy license a bit of room to breathe, which should allow Splinter Cell: Conviction to stand out a little more.
